A 288MW follow-up order for what’s being billed as Latin America’s largest wind project was one of a clutch of deals announced by turbine OEM giant Vestas as the last days of the year approach.

Vestas booked a 288MW, 64-machine deal from Engie for the Serra de Assuruá wind farm in the Brazilian state of Bahia, adding to a 540MW contract signed in September.

When completed Serra de Assuruá will have an 846MW total nominal capacity making it the region’s largest when it enters service from late 2024, said Vestas as it announced the latest order for its V150-4.5MW turbines.

The deal for Serra de Assuruá marks another big moment for the V150 in Latin America, where Vestas has booked orders for more than 8GW for the machine in Brazil alone since 2018.

The Brazilian deal joined others from the US and Europe announced by Vestas in the last few days.

The Danish group agreed a 73MW repowering order for its V110 2.2MW machines at an undisclosed American project with commissioning in Q4 2023.

Across the Atlantic Vestas secured a 93MW order from Sweden’s SR Energy for its giant V162-6.2 MW turbines, which will equip the Älgkullen wind project. That added to a 32MW Italian order secured just before Christmas.

With a few days still to go of the year, Vestas’ announced order tally for the fourth quarter of 2022 stood at 2.63GW.

In the same quarter of 2021 it booked 2.86GW of announced and unannounced orders.

Vestas' total order tally so far in 2022 as the year end approached stood at 9.62GW. In 2021 the OEM booked deals for 13.9GW.

Vestas CEO Henrik Andersen said during third quarter results in November that there had been no-let up in the pressures bearing down on the wind industry, as he cut the OEM's financial forecast for 2022.
