Development plans for an innovative direct-drive (DD) wind turbine purpose-designed by Dutch technologist Darwind for the offshore market are being geared up again after Chinese industrial group XEMC stepped in earlier this year to take over the start-up company in the wake of the bankruptcy of its former majority shareholder, Dutch holding company Econcern.
Darwind's DD115 unit has a 115-metre-diameter rotor, fully sealed tower and nacelle, external overpressure-driven air cooling system and single main bearing concept that reduces the size and weight of its permanent-magnet DD generator.
