Destined for Deepwater Wind's pioneering 30MW Block Island array off the east coast of the US, the 6MW Haliade was created by Alstom before its takeover by GE in answer to the French government's original 3GW offshore wind tender in 2011.

The turbine's 73.5-metre LM blades power a novel electromechanical layout that marries the company's PureTorque load-deflecting rotor-support technology with a compact Advance High Density direct-drive transmission system, including a permanent-magnet generator owned by GE Power Conversion.

Block Island, the US' flagship offshore wind project, is under construction off Providence, Rhode Island.

Below, the first Haliades on the floor of the factory, and emerging for the cameras.
