Yet again, and unsurprisingly, China dominated the global wind market, although the strength of China’s performance caught analysts off guard.

“China was by far the biggest surprise,” says Amy Grace, head of Wind Insight at BNEF. “While it’s not atypical for China to lead in new energy installs, 29GW far exceeded our estimates.”

The Chinese boom was the result of developers rushing to complete projects to qualify for a higher feed-in tariff that expired at the end of 2015, Grace says.
