The 310MW development, being built around 365 Vestas V52-850kW turbines, will export power through a line connecting Loyangalani near the project site to the outskirts of the capital Nairobi, opening up rural electrification plans in the region.
"Once operational, [the Lake Turkana wind farm] will provide approximately 15% of total power generation in Kenya, equivalent to approximately 330,000 households," says Matthias Vinard, project manager at contractor Mott MacDonald, which is serving as technical advisor on the project.
