Industry body RenewableUK says wind farms reached a new record by meeting 12.2% of national power demand on December 28.

Strong winds throughout December allowed the UK fleet to achieve an average 5.3% share.

RenewableUK praised transmission system operator National Grid’s management of the surging output.

Policy director Gordon Edge says: “As we're generating increasingly large amounts of electricity from wind, feeding those large volumes of power into the system represents an engineering challenge to the National Grid – a challenge we are pleased to see they met over Christmas.”
