The Kitty Hawk area comprises 122,405 acres (495.3sq km) on the outer continental shelf off the state’s northeastern coast close to its border with Virginia. The area is located 24 miles (38.6km) at its closest point to shore.

Developers interested in bidding have until 17 October to notify DOI’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), which oversees offshore wind development beyond state territorial limits.
