The areas proposed for leasing are expected to be able to support more than 4GW of wind generation – enough electricity to power an estimated 1.4 million homes, according to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), the DOI agency that oversees wind energy development on the outer continental shelf under federal jurisdiction.
“Today we are moving closer to tapping into this massive domestic energy resource to create jobs,” says Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, adding the move will increase US energy security and strengthen its “competitiveness in this new energy frontier.”
