The Navy will undertake an environmental assessment for the 9MW project before requesting proposals from private developers for its construction and operation, Rear Admiral Townsend “Tim” Alexander, commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, tells Recharge.
No turbine supply contracts have been signed, adds Alexander, speaking at the American wind Energy Association's (AWEA) Offshore Windpower 2012 conference.
The US Navy aims to produce at least half of its shore-based energy requirements from alternative sources by 2020.
