US issues draft eagle impact review for 3GW Wyoming wind project

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is seeking public comment on its long-awaited Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) that evaluates the impact of issuing two permits for “non-purposeful take” of eagles from first phase construction and operation of the massive Chokecherry and Sierra Madre wind farm.

Late Wednesday, FWS released the 1,000-plus page document - among the last critical regulatory reviews for a project that developer Power Company of Wyoming (PCW) envisions as the world’s largest. Both first and second phases would be 1.5GW each.

PCW has spent more than eight years trying to obtain permits and regulatory approvals for the $5bn project. It would be built on public and private lands located on billionaire Philip Anschutz’s Overland Trail Ranch in southern Wyoming that it either leases or owns.
