Former president Tabare Vazquez of the center-left Broad Front coalition will face Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, son of former president Luis Alberto Lacalle, of the center-right National Party.
Vazquez fell about two percentage points shy of the outright majority needed to avoid the runoff, while Lacalle Pou obtained about 30%, with Pedro Bordaberry of the Colorado Party taking about 13%. Bordaberry announced that he would support Lacalle Pou in the second round.
