The European Commission is moving forward with plans to create a separate climate-change ministry, cleaving a number of responsibilities from the existing environment ministry.
But a chorus of members of European parliament have expressed concern over the plan, warning that separating the two posts would dilute the potency of Europe's leadership on the global stage.
Hedegaard now awaits formal approval for the role by the European Commission.
