The 4.131GW spike at 0956 local time was enough to power more than three million British homes, says industry group RenewableUK.

The figure – almost 11% of the total supply – beat a previous record of 3.8GW onto the National Grid on 13 May this year.

RenewableUK points out that it does not include the 2.2GW of wind capacity – one-third of the total – flowing power directly to local electricity networks rather than the National Grid.
