The Conservatives were this morning poised to take sufficient seats at Westminster to govern the UK alone, after spending five years ruling in coalition with the smaller Liberal Democrats.

After pre-election predictions of a close result and a new coalition, the outcome is a triumph for incumbent Prime Minister David Cameron.
