Formal EC state aid approval has been granted by EU competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia, after a divided debate which saw commissioners from at least five countries opposed to the plan.
Almunia had been scrutinising the proposed Hinkley Point plant since December and had initially raised serious concerns that more than £17.6bn of “potentially wasteful” public guarantees to French utility EDF Energy may constitute illegal state aid.
