Although the UK boasts the world’s largest offshore wind market, the government’s inability to secure firm commitments from turbine makers to open shop on British soil had been one of its biggest headaches as it has hammered together its future renewables policy.

As such, Areva’s announcement last week that it will build a turbine factory near Edinburgh represented a breakthrough, taking some of the sting out of Vestas' decision to walk away from a planned factory at Sheerness, and Siemens' more recent revelation that it will wait until next year to finalise its decision for Hull.
