The heady days of talking about the “opportunity” of installed offshore wind capacity as high as 30GW in 2020 have long given way to a more realistic appraisal of what is feasible. Price support is in place for 11GW to be operating in the UK by the end of 2020.

Recent number crunching suggests that offshore is well advanced on its journey towards reaching a levelised cost of energy of £76-110 ($118-171) per MWh by 2020, with the potential of £53/MWh by 2030 if a repowering strategy is implemented to add 10-12MW turbines to the existing fleet.
