There are 894MW of wind in operation and 212MW under construction according to the government’s renewable-energy department, Cifes. On top of that, 5.6GW of projects have received their environmental licences — an essential step before companies can negotiate financing and register for auctions — and a further 2.2GW are seeking permits.

In contrast to Brazil, where turbines must be built locally in order for developers to get cut-price loans, Chile has no such restrictions and has therefore attracted a more diversified group of players, including developers Juwi and Pattern Energy, and turbine makers Vestas, Nordex, Gamesa, GE and Acciona.
