It has managed to beat Finnish energy group Fortum and Indian developer Greenko in competing for the solar and wind portfolio, which includes uncompleted and operational projects, according to The Economic Times.
Hyderabad-based Greenko is backed by Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC.
Tata expects to sign an agreement with Welpsun within the next three weeks.
The deal would be among the biggest such acquisitions in the Indian wind market to date.
