The towers used at most US wind farms today are significantly shorter than those used in some mature wind markets, like Germany. But that is changing, industry figures say, and the consequences will be significant.
Taller towers are more expensive than shorter ones, and more difficult to transport -- a big problem in a vast place like the US. But a number of alternative tower configurations are in the early stages of commercial deployment, and may soon change the underlying economics for towers in the US.
