The RET requires electricity retailers to buy renewable certificates from wind and solar farms, or to generate clean power themselves, and currently mandates for 41TWh of energy to come from renewable sources by 2020.
The government had previously said it wanted cuts to the target and conducted a review, led by climate sceptic Dick Warburton, which duly recommended a reduction.
Now Australia's environment minister Greg Hunt and industry minister Ian Macfarlane, are trying to reach a bipartisan agreement with opposition politicians about a future for the programme that would allow continued investments.
