SSE's decision came as the Scottish government granted planning consent for Infinis Energy to build a 55MW wind development on Scotland's mainland.
The renewables division of utility SSE says after studying the available data, it believes the risk of bird collisions in particular will make the 26-turbine project at Lewis’s Pairc Estate impossible. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said several species faced risks from turbines.
