Southern Power, an unregulated wholesale electricity supplier, still relies on gas-fired plants for most of the 10.3GW it has in operation or under development across nine US states. But it has pushed aggressively into utility-scale solar in recent years, becoming a regular buyer of large projects from the likes of First Solar and Canadian Solar.
Meanwhile, in 2015 Southern Power made its first foray into wind, buying the 299MW Kay and then the 151MW Grant projects – both in Oklahoma – from the developer Apex Clean Energy.
