According to a government statement, the total is the national ambition that wind, solar, biomass and hydropower sources will contribute "in future" – although no timeframe is given.
South Africa currently has 3.7GW coming through the system from clean energy projects awarded so far under its five-round Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
From the first two rounds the country has grid-connected more than 1GW of renewables, and still has to connect another 1.2GW
