The 17% year-on-year increase in renewables investment marked the first rise in three years, said the annual Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investments study from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
Last year's figure brought total investments back within sight of the record $279bn seen in 2011.
China dominated the investment landscape in 2014, with a record $83.3bn committed to the sector, a 39% rise on 2013’s level.
