The UAE – which relies on home-produced and imported gas to meet all its domestic demand – could reap huge benefits if it expands a renewables programme that has already seen the world’s lowest tender bid for solar power, according to the report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) and Abu Dhabi’s own Masdar Institute.
The report claims the UAE could hit a 10% share of renewables in its total energy mix and almost 25% in power generation, saving its energy system about $1.9bn
