The Scotland-based company was a pace-setter of the UK’s clean-energy drive under former CEO Ian Marchant, who stepped down in mid-2013 after more than a decade in charge.
Under Marchant SSE became one of Europe’s most enthusiastic renewables investors, exemplified by its €1.8bn acquisition of Dublin-based Airtricity in 2008.
SSE is still a big-hitter in the UK, with a fraction over 1GW of onshore wind capacity and 355MW offshore, as part of a generation portfolio that also includes 1.1GW
