The German OEM’s leading edge protection (LEP) solution, which can be painted-on as a ‘top coat’, directly affixed in specially treated shell-sections offshore or used to beef up new-build blades during manufacture, has been shown to "significantly" counter the annual energy production (AEP) losses linked to wear and tear of blades in operation at offshore wind farms.

Working with developer Dong at the 209MW Horns Rev 2 development off Denmark, where a programme of blade repair was launched last year after leading edge erosion (LEE) was discovered to have damaged the rotors of a number of turbines, Siemens “made an opportunity of a problem” by combining its LEP solution with energy-capture honing add-ons that enhance the aerodynamics of the blade.
