The SWT-7.0-154, which flies a 154-metre-diameter rotor powering a compact direct-drive transmission system, is calculated to be capable of producing 32 million kWh of electricity under North Sea wind conditions, enough to supply up to 7,000 homes.

"The installation of the 7MW version is an exciting step in its further development," says Siemens Wind Power head of technology Morten Rasmussen. “Based on the reliable technology and supply chain of our 6MW machine we have improved our flagship wind turbine with stronger permanent magnets, optimised generator segments and upgraded converter and transformer units."

Siemens expects "with only these minor changes" that the D7 platform turbine will be cued up for serial production inside two years.
