The nomination of Sefcovic to the position of vice-president for energy union comes after the rejection of former Slovenian ex-prime minister Alenka Bratusek by members of the European Parliament’s environment and energy committees earlier this month.

Sefcovic will co-ordinate the work of several commissioners – for energy, climate action and transport – in president-elect Jean-Claude Juncker’s new European Commission.

He will be in charge of overseeing plans to create an energy union in the bloc.
