Sarkozy said that the carbon tax, which will be initially set at €17 per tonne of CO2 emissions, will be introduced in 2010, making France the largest European economy to introduce such a measure.
“It’s a question of the survival of the human race,” said Sarkozy in a speech. “There is one objective: to encourage homes and businesses to change their behaviour,” and prepare for a post-fossil fuels society.
