The RWE renewable energy unit more than doubled operating profits to €493m ($542.6m) last year, as more than 1GW of new wind power came on stream.

The new capacity included the 295MW Nordsee Ost project in Germany and the 576MW Gwynt y Mor off the northwest UK, where RWE has a 50% share.

But the higher renewables profits could not make a dent in RWE's other problems, and the group posted an annual net loss of €170m, compared to a profit of €1.7bn
