The CPP is the most important US environmental regulation in decades, and the centrepiece of outgoing president Barack Obama’s legacy on climate change.
Designed to force a 32% reduction in the carbon spewed from US power plants by 2030 from 2005 levels, the CPP would greatly strengthen the medium- and long-term renewables market.
More importantly, it would give a veil of credibility to US promises on climate change made last year as part of the Paris Agreement.
