Alongside smaller municipal or regional suppliers, the large Munich utility Stadtwerke München (SWM) also announced a price cut.

Munich mayor and SWM chairman Dieter Reiter said an average Munich household will benefit by 2.5%.

SWM cites the decrease in the renewables surcharge and lower procurement costs for energy as reasons for the slight fall in its electricity rate. Higher grid connection fees, however, impede further cost reductions.

SWM is one of Germany's pioneering utilities in terms of renewables expansion, and among its other investments is betting heavily on offshore wind power.
