The Abu Dhabi-based organisation's Renewables and Electricity Storage Forecast, which estimates demand for 150GW of battery-based ESS and 325GW of pumped hydro storage, springs from its REmap 2030 roadmap, which found the share of renewables in the global energy mix must rise to 45% by 2030 if "the worst effects of climate change" [are to be] avoided".
“Now is the time to think about integrating large-scale battery storage into the global energy system,” says Irena director-general Adnan Amin.
