The new 66kV system, which couples upscaled electricity throughput with “state-of-the-art materials and lighter designs”, has been rubber-stamped in accordance with key industry test protocols, as part of the UK Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator programme.
Prysmian has now type-tested a three-core, 66kV “wet-design” cable system with aluminium conductor and integrated optical element insulated with ethylene propylene rubber — a material that the company says marries “excellent performance” in direct contact with water with the cost-effectiveness of a lighter, lead-free design.
