The electric utility is investing $300,000 of research and development funding in the project through its Carolinas division, matching the amount provided by the US Energy Department through funding by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The total study cost is estimated at about $1m, with funding balance to come from federal grants and other private sponsors.
