Sempra Energy is building the Sierra Juarez project in Baja California and has a 20-year supply contract with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDGE) at a rate of $106.50/MWh – the first deal by a US utility to import Mexican wind power.

The 230kV link will be about 2.7km long, of which roughly one-third would be on the US side, crossing the border near Jacumba and connecting to the East County substation project, which has been approved for construction.
