No commercial-sized wind farm is operating today in Panama, and building work on one has been halted due to the lack of a viable power-purchase agreement.

However, the Panamanian government is extremely interested in getting wind power into the grid, and is planning to hold a tender for an undetermined amount of capacity, either later this year or early next.

The pilot project will be used as a "showroom" for the country to prove that wind power can be viable, says Ricardo Quijano, director for international issues with the energy secretariat.
