By boosting the rating of its resonant transformer, the facility's high-voltage reactor can now be used for automated step-breakdown testing of 66kV cable systems using water terminations, making it possible to test and develop interarray systems with greater power density, lower operational losses and fewer offshore substations.
These higher-voltage transmission set-ups are expected to have a dramatic impact by cutting the levelised cost of energy of larger offshore wind farms.
