The Clone of the Levenmouth Turbine (CLOWT), at the heart of a £450,000 ($593,000) project part funded by the Scottish government, will use "real life" data fed back from sensor instrumentation on the unit's blades, tower and jacket foundation to winkle out design "inefficiencies and flaws" from existing methodologies and software tools being used.
"With the rapid scale in growth of offshore wind turbines, with 8MW machines now being readily deployed and the industry looking to develop 10MW turbines, industry needs to rethink and revalidate assumptions associated with offshore wind turbine designs," states ORE Catapult's sector lead for wind Cian Conroy.
