The drought in California, now in its fourth year, is particularly scary. The state’s “new era of heat”, as it has been called, is destroying all previous records. The past 12 months were 2.5°C above the 20th-century average. Last month, a survey showed no snow whatsoever in the mountains, so reservoirs will not be replenished.
