Next generation PV semiconductors, harsh-environment coatings for PV modules and concentrating solar power componentry, hybrid reinforcements for wind turbine blades, lower-cost permanent magnets for direct drive turbine power trains, and innovative battery chemistries are seen as among the areas ripe for improvements that would take the technologies to new levels of productivity and reliability, says the company.
“For any of these novel materials to be commercially viable, they should not only offer a cheaper and better alternative to existing materials, but must also be readily available and reliable over long periods of time,” says DNV GL Research & Innovation researcher Liu Cao.
