Ming Yang's super compact drive (SCD) offshore wind turbine prototype is a 6.5MW platform, designed to be at the heart of machines with nameplates ranging from 5MW-7MW.
The 140-metre-diameter-rotor turbine, designed by Germany's aerodyn, will now undergo a two-year test programme at the site in 0-6 metres of water on a tidal plain.
Aerodyn's turbine design, which builds-in technology to lock the rotor in a horizontal position to ride out extreme weather, including typhoons, promises to be a game-changer for offshore wind.
