The 250kW LeitDrive 4Q frequencyconverter, which was put through its paces in five 1.5MW machines inMontecatini, Tuscany, is designed for turbines up to 3MW.

Modular construction means thatmultiple converters, each with independent electric circuits, would be fittedto turbines of 1MW and larger, providing higher availability and productivitysince the turbine can continue to run if one should fail.

Each 400mm-wide module is afully functional unit including a grid and motor side inverter, high efficiencyinsulated-gatebipolar transistors (IBGT), and acustom-made, water-cooled power stack.
