KPS aims to have 500kW version of its kite-and-tether system, which produces electricity as it spools out and in of a generator 'yo-yo' style to heights of 500-750 metres, flying in a "controlled airspace" at the former RAF West Freugh base near Stranraer by April 2017.
The demonstration unit, developed with some £3m ($4.3m) in backing including from oil giant Shell and the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change, would be the next step in fine-tuning the technology as a 3MW floating concept that could slash the cost of conventional offshore wind power to £50/MWh from current expectations of £78/MWh by 2020.
