In October 2013, a group of companies and research entities installed a 2MW Hitachi turbine — mounted on a floating hybrid spar foundation — near Kabashima, an island in the remote Goto archipelago, off the west coast of the Japanese island of Kyushu.
The turbine generates more electricity than the tiny fishing community on Kabashima needs, so the MOE has decided to use the surplus to produce hydrogen for fuel cells, with the aim of providing power to other islands in the area.
