In its so-called synthesis report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) suggests that renewable sources such as solar, wind and hydro will have to grow from around 30% of electricity generation at present to a share of 80% by 2050.

The IPCC says in the longer term that fossil-fuel power generation without carbon capture will have to be “phased out almost entirely by 2100” – a clear indication that greener electricity will be a key driver for the future.
