ONGC hopes to tap offshore wind power for use in its oil and gas processing operations, as well as exporting electricty to the onshore grid for sale.

The Indian group plans to build and operate a 10MW pilot offshore plant and decide if a large-scale development is viable.

A full-scale commercial plant would target a capacity of 500MW using wind turbines of 5MW or above.

ONGC has already started to identify potential zones and carry out wind resource assessment.
