They are the cornerstones of the US renewables market: some 98% of US wind capacity (currently standing at 64.4GW) and 99% of solar capacity (18.3GW) have been installed since the PTC and ITC were established, in 1992 and 2006 respectively.
Yet the policies face highly uncertain futures. Both will probably be eliminated or reduced dramatically over the next few years. The Republicans’ triumph in last year’s congressional elections puts extra pressure on subsidies or tax breaks of any kind.
